The W-18A Kodiak II is not a new design but a redesign of an old Russian Mi-55 Kodiak. The Mi-55 was a premier heavy attack gunship of the eastern european nations before the Third World War. It in turn was based off the old Mi-24 Hind attack helicopter from the earily 21 century. Even Though teh Mi-55 design ceased to be produced during the Third World War, many found themselves being used during the Unification Wars. It was at the time still a successful if old design. However as spare parts were beggining to run dry and the design itself was beggining to show its age, the USE looked for a new unit to replace the Kodiak.
In 2191 the Polish Aircraft Industries (PZL) unveiled the W-18A Kodiak II. At first glance, the design looked like an enlarged and newer looking Kodiak. And in a way, it was. The Kodiak II however was 20% bigger, had a slightly higher top speed, was much more heavily armored and carried a heavier weapons armament in addition to a much imporved sensor suite. Its similarity in appearence and weapons loadout to its oder brother made it an instant winner with many officers of the USE who were so used and fond of the Mi-55. CEGA even took intrest in the project and it became the primary heavy attack helicopter of the Euro-Asian FDA.
The W-18A Kodiak II was developed as a simple upgrade of the Mi-55 design. Faced with many design choices, the Polish engineers chose a standard rotor system over the aerodyne design, due to its relative simplicity and their expertise with the proven propulsion system. The design was heavily armored to the point where its large size would not hinder its survivability. The weapons loadout was not modified but upgraded, using more advanced and powerful variants of the weapon systems.
The weapon pylons of the helicopter are operated by the gunner seated in the front cocpit seat. Twin firelinked 45mm autocannons are the primary weapon systems, able to chew out 84kg of ammo every second onto the target. The wings also feature twin heavy ATM pods, twin heavy rocket pods and two AA pods to round off the armament. The pilot, who sits behind the gunner, controls the centerline 30mm autocannon and the BAM (balistic anti-missile) system against the helicopters primary threat, SAMs.
The cocpit is completely enclosed for maximum pretection, but equiped with a heavy sensor suite which remedies the vision problem; slightly.
Trully a beast to be feared of.
