IGS Runnersuit

by Colin Dunn

Runnersuit Descent The RunnerSuit was originally developed by Civilian Exo Werkes (a subsidiary of JAW). Based off the highly successful Decker exo-suit, the Runner was originally designed for shaft and elevator maintenance in the Jovian habitats. Variants of this design still run up and down the 5 km-long tubes of the habitat spokes. The Jovian government saw another use for them, however, and had CEW redesign them for a multiple-use environment. The new suits could handle both the vacuum of space, and the pressures of the Jovian atmosphere. The government wanted a class of suits that could be used to maintain the vast array of skyhooks that created the Confederation’s wealth.

The rail system, along with the tool arms, is designed to attach the suit to a variety of cable systems, so it can run up and down easily. The limited space manoeuvering system is for emergencies only.

Though not designed for combat, the RunnerSuit has action on at least three occasions: Once during a terrorist incident on Far Tokyo Station, in the Olympus cluster, where ESAWT teams used the unique capabilities of the suit to resuce 12 hostages rom an observation car 2km up the spoke of the station. The other two times took place on or hear Jovian skyhook installations, and are still under a publication ban. Presumably, though, the suits were used in a similar manner as the Far Tokyo incident.

In late 2205, as the IGS was completing the first stage of assembly on their new ship, the Calypso II, they realized they would have need of an emergency system if something should go wrong with the tether system. After some research, they came up with the RunnerSuit. As part of the Confederation’s ongoing support of the IGS, two suits were donated in early 2206, and both are assigned to the Calypso II.
