Carolyn Rueda-Johnson

by Dennis D. Kirkpatrick

BACKGROUND

Born onboard the IGSSS Crius research vessel in the Jovian port of Elysée colony, Carolyn’s life began as a traveler of planets, much like her family heritage. The great granddaughter of prominent Latin American Catholics, Carolyn’s maternal family, the Rueda, had escaped the grips of Earth’s Fall in the Great Exodus. They settled on many colonies before reaching the Jovian Confederation over a generation later. Her father and mother, Jared Johnson and Isabella Rueda, were prominent Jovian IGS planetary scientists, who spent much of their time traversing the solar system performing IGS supported research.

Carolyn grew up happy despite the consistent travel. Her parents worked hard to provide opportunity and regularity to Carolyn and her three younger sisters. Still, Carolyn grew shy and seeming self-involved. Unlike her sisters, she was not driven with the studies and the goals that accompanied her sisters’ ambitions. Instead, Carolyn would spend her hours daydreaming over engineering texts and following quietly alongside the engineers and technicians that worked in the stations and ships of the IGS.

Being born to prominent IGS scientists afforded Carolyn the reward of a free IGS education. At the age of 16, Isabella, recognizing her daughter’s engineering aptitudes encouraged Carolyn to pursue engineering at Elysée IGS University. Carolyn eventually graduated with honors four years later. Disenfranchised with the prospect of a military career in the JAF and an even greater distaste for a position as a junior station technician, Carolyn joined the IGS as a shipboard engineer.

Ten years later, Carolyn is still a traveling soul. Her traveling seeming a physical manifestation of her own personal uncertainties in her self-identity. Regardless, her past missions aboard the IGSSS Demeter II and IGSSS Mnemosyne have certainly giving her a unique and honored career. Affording her the opportunity to explore new ideas and career opportunities. What Carolyn doesn’t know is that the happenings aboard the Mnemosyne have brought her travels under the eye of certain watchful organizations.

PROFESSION

Carolyn started her career on many short-term assignments within the IGS and served with great success. Three years later, Carolyn was offered a position as assistant engineer aboard the IGSSS Demeter II, a modified scout. The mission was to perform a deep space survey on the asteroids groups in the L1 and L2 LaGrange points of Uranus. During the mission, an accelerated gravity whip around Neptune resulted in a minor explosion in one of the Demeter II engines. The lead engineer was tragically killed. However, Carolyn faced this tragedy with remarkable professionalism taking the leadership position as ship’s lead engineer. Regardless of the setbacks due to the tragic accident, Carolyn helped the Demeter II maintain it’s survey window. She also participated in a creative plan with the chief navigational officer involving boosting the main engines’ efficiency, allowing the Demeter II to include a close investigation of a newly sighted cluster of micro-comets on the voyage home. This was the first time that such clusters had been studied up close.

However, her commemorative return to Elysée was a short homecoming. The IGSS Mnemosyne was in desperate need of a lead engineer to complete its Stargazer and Neptune missions. At the disappointment of her parents and friends, she leaped at the opportunity. Following an uneventful rendezvous to Stevenson station orbiting Titan, Carolyn continued to perform her duties onboard the Mnemosyne despite her lack of involvement with the antics of the crew. However, when the crew came across the drifting hull of the ill-fated Beagle II, Carolyn's life became a lot more complicated. The circumstances that followed the Mnemosyne’s mission have been shrouded in mystery behind the Clotho's Intelligence efforts. Even Carolyn doesn't understand everything that happened. However, strange and mysterious circumstances have started cropping up all around her. Recently allowed back into service and newly assigned to Stevenson research base in orbit above Saturn, Carolyn has tried to put the past several months behind her, but there are people that want her to remember.

ATTITUDES

Having lived and served most of her life aboard IGS ships, Carolyn has adopted a simple attitude toward life that fosters a simple lifestyle with singular interests. Being a bit of a tomboy due to her profession, Carolyn is very purposeful in her actions and talk, almost mother-like. As such, she does take initiative in her duties and leadership role. However, she struggles with self-doubt in her leadership skill. Most of her fellow IGS officers don’t understand her lack of confidence. She is a very talented engineer and carries a lot of respect among her colleagues.

The oldest child of four daughters, Carolyn learned to take care of others. However, her childhood shyness has given her an almost ghost-like nature, allowing her to drift quietly around others without their notice. This ghost-like trait coupled with her curiosity, has led her to some startling discoveries. Sometimes placing Carolyn in circumstances far over her head. Despite her shyness, she does generally enjoy the company of others and their conversations.

COMBAT REACTIONS

Carolyn has no combat training whatsoever. Despite the fact that she will most likely run when faced with danger, she may attempt to defend herself with a handy mechanic’s wrench.
